Renting a car in North Cyprus — Your Questions

Good to know

Everything customers ask most often, answered plainly. If something isn't here, message us on WhatsApp and we'll answer within minutes.

Insurance & Damage

What insurance is included in my rental?

Every rental includes third-party liability insurance. This covers injury or damage you cause to other people, vehicles or property. It does not cover the car you are driving — for that, add Collision Damage Waiver (CDW).

What is CDW and how much does it cost?

CDW is our only optional cover and costs £3 per day. It caps what you pay for accidental damage to the rental car at a fixed excess, instead of leaving you responsible for the whole repair bill. We strongly recommend it.

Is there an excess if the car is damaged?

Yes, and we tell you the amount before you book. With CDW, the most you pay towards damage in an accident that was your fault is £500. Without CDW, you pay the full repair cost, however high it turns out to be.

Example. Repairs after a minor bump come to £1,200. Without CDW you pay £1,200. With CDW you pay £500, and we cover the rest.

What if the accident wasn't my fault?

If the police report confirms the other party was at fault, you typically pay nothing. This is exactly why an on-site police report matters so much.

What does CDW cover?

Accidental damage to the car's bodywork, and collision damage to the engine and mechanical parts.

What isn't covered, even with CDW?
  • Tyres, wheels and wheel rims
  • Windscreen, windows, glass and mirrors
  • Headlights and the underbody
  • The interior, and lost or broken keys
  • Wrong fuel, a flat battery, and personal belongings
  • Damage from off-road or beach driving

These exclusions are standard across Cyprus, so please take extra care with these parts of the car.

When does insurance stop applying?

Your cover, including CDW, will not apply — and you may be liable for the full cost of damage — if at the time of the incident the driver:

  • was under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • was exceeding the speed limit or breaking traffic laws
  • was not named on the rental agreement
  • had taken the car outside North Cyprus
  • did not obtain an on-site police accident report
Do I need a police report for every accident?

Yes, in every case of accident or damage.

Without an official police report, no insurance claim can be processed — and if the accident was your fault, you would be personally responsible for the full cost of the damage.

What happens if I return the car with damage?

We inspect every car on return. Without CDW, you are responsible for the full repair cost of any new damage. With CDW, your liability is capped at the £500 excess. Any insurance claim must be supported by a police report.

Deposit, Payment & Prices

Do I have to pay a deposit?

No. Unlike most companies here, we ask for no deposit and no credit-card hold. You pay for your rental, and nothing else is blocked on your card.

Is the price I see the final price?

Yes. All our rates include VAT and local taxes. The only optional extra is CDW at £3 per day, and we always show it clearly before you book. Nothing mandatory is added when you collect the car.

How can I pay?

You can pay online by card when you book, or by card or cash when we hand over the car. We accept GBP, EUR and TRY. Prices on our site are shown in GBP.

Can I cancel or change my booking?

Yes. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pick-up. Changing your dates or car group depends on availability and may change the price.

What is the minimum rental period?

Three days. A rental day is 24 hours from your pick-up time.

Do I get a refund if I return the car early?

Yes. We refund 50% of the rental price for each full unused day. Or, if you prefer, we can hold the full unused amount as credit towards your next rental with us.

The three-day minimum still applies, and CDW charges for unused days aren't refunded.

Do you offer long-term or business rentals?

Yes. We have discounted monthly rates for long stays, and corporate accounts for companies that need cars regularly, with consolidated invoicing and priority availability. Email info@rentacarzone.com or message us on WhatsApp and we'll put a quote together.

Drivers & Documents

How old do I need to be to rent a car?

At least 25 on the day the rental starts.

What licence do I need?

A valid full driving licence. We accept both national and international licences, and there is no minimum number of years you need to have held it.

What documents do I need when I collect the car?

A valid passport and your driving licence. Any additional driver needs to show the same documents.

Can my partner or a friend also drive?

Yes, free of charge. You can name up to two drivers on one agreement at no extra cost.

Both drivers must be named on the rental agreement to be insured. Anyone driving who isn't named is not covered.

Pick-up & Return

How does pick-up at Ercan Airport work?

Give us your flight number when you book and we'll track your flight. After you collect your baggage, our representative will be waiting in arrivals with a sign showing your name. If your flight is delayed, we adjust automatically and there is no extra charge.

Can you deliver the car to my hotel or villa?

Yes. Delivery is free anywhere in Kyrenia and at Ercan Airport — hotel, villa or apartment, whichever you are staying in. We also deliver to Nicosia, Famagusta, İskele and other areas for a small fee based on the distance. Give us the address when you book and we'll confirm the cost.

Can I return the car somewhere else?

Yes. You can collect in Kyrenia and return at Ercan Airport, or the other way round, at no extra cost. Returns in other areas are possible for a small fee based on distance. Please let us know when you book so we can plan the collection.

What if I return the car late?

We allow a three-hour grace period after your agreed return time at no charge. Beyond that, a full extra day is charged. If you'd like to keep the car longer, message us in advance and we'll extend the booking.

I'm flying into Larnaca or Paphos. Can you help?

Yes. We arrange a paid transfer from Larnaca or Paphos airport to North Cyprus, where your rental car will be waiting. Share your flight details when you book and we'll quote the transfer and set the timing around your arrival.

Our rental cars can't cross the border, which is why we handle the airport leg by transfer.

Fuel & Mileage

Is mileage limited?

No. Every rental includes unlimited mileage, so you can explore the whole of North Cyprus without watching the odometer.

What is the fuel policy?

You receive the car with a certain fuel level and return it at the same level. There is nothing to pre-pay and no charge for fuel you don't use. If the car comes back with less fuel than it left with, we charge the difference at the pump price.

Breakdowns & Accidents

What if the car breaks down?

Call our 24/7 roadside assistance line. If it's a mechanical fault, we'll repair the car or bring you a replacement at no charge.

If a warning light comes on, pull over, switch off the engine and call us before driving any further.

What should I do after an accident?
  1. Make sure everyone is safe. Switch on your hazard lights and move to safety if there is danger. If anyone is hurt, call an ambulance on 112.
  2. Call the police on 155. Wait for an official accident report and don't move the cars until the police arrive, unless staying put is unsafe.
  3. Call us straight away on our 24/7 line. We'll guide you through it and arrange a replacement car if you need one.
  4. Take photos and collect details. Photograph all vehicles, the damage, the number plates and the scene. Note the other driver's name, phone number, plate and insurance details.
  5. Don't admit fault at the scene. Let the police report and the insurers decide. Don't sign anything you don't understand, and don't agree to a private settlement.

Without the police report, the insurance cannot pay out.

Crossing to South Cyprus

Can I drive the car to South Cyprus?

No. Our insurance is valid in North Cyprus only, and taking the car across the border voids your cover completely — including CDW. If you'd like to visit the South, ask us and we'll suggest the best way to get there.

Cars & Extras

Are the cars automatic?

Yes, every car in our fleet is automatic. That's one less thing to think about while you get used to driving on the left.

Can I choose a specific car model?

Yes. If you book in advance, we guarantee the exact model you selected, not just “a similar car”. For last-minute bookings we'll tell you upfront if that model isn't free and offer you a car of the same class or better.

Are child seats available?

Yes, free of charge. Tell us your child's age when you book and we'll have the right seat fitted before we hand over the car. They go quickly in summer, so please ask early.

Driving in North Cyprus

Which side of the road do people drive on?

The left, as in the UK, and the cars are right-hand drive. Speed limits are shown in kilometres per hour, and at roundabouts you give way to traffic coming from your right. Take extra care in your first couple of days.

Are there speed cameras?

Yes, there are fixed speed cameras across North Cyprus. Any traffic fines, speeding penalties or parking charges during your rental are the driver's responsibility.

Do I really need a car in North Cyprus?

For most visitors, yes. Public transport between Kyrenia, Nicosia, Famagusta, İskele and the Karpaz Peninsula is limited, and a car lets you follow your own route and timings rather than a bus timetable.

Still have a question?

Our team is available around the clock — before, during and after your rental.
