Kyrenia / Girne
Harbour views, mountain roads and centuries of history
Kyrenia is one of the best places to begin exploring North Cyprus.
Walk around the historic harbour and Kyrenia Castle before heading into the mountains towards Bellapais Abbey or climbing higher towards St Hilarion Castle.
With the Mediterranean on one side and the Kyrenia mountain range on the other, even a short drive outside the city can become part of the experience.
Continue west for beaches, villages and coastal scenery, or head east along the coast for another side of the Kyrenia region.
Famagusta / Gazimağusa
Ancient ruins, mighty walls and long sandy beaches
Famagusta combines some of the most impressive historical sites in North Cyprus with a beautiful eastern coastline.
Begin inside the Walled City of Famagusta, where medieval fortifications surround historic streets, churches and landmarks.
A short drive north takes you towards the archaeological site of Salamis, one of the island's major ancient sites, while the coastline around Famagusta and İskele offers long stretches of sandy beach.
Famagusta is also an excellent starting point for a road trip towards İskele, Long Beach and the Karpaz Peninsula.
Karpaz Peninsula
Take the long road east
Some journeys are about the destination. Karpaz is about both.
The peninsula stretches towards the eastern tip of Cyprus and offers one of the island's most distinctive drives.
Expect open landscapes, small villages, Mediterranean views and stretches of coastline that feel far removed from the busier resort areas.
At the end of the journey, Golden Beach is one of the peninsula's best-known natural landmarks, while the wider Karpaz area is also known for its wildlife, historic sites and free-roaming donkeys.
Don't rush this drive. Stop along the way. Explore the villages. Find a viewpoint. Have lunch somewhere you didn't plan to visit.

Nicosia / Lefkoşa
Explore the historic heart of the island
North Nicosia offers a completely different experience from the coastal towns.
Inside the old city walls you'll find narrow streets, traditional architecture, shops, cafés and important historic landmarks including Büyük Han and Selimiye Mosque.
It's an excellent destination for a day away from the beach and an easy addition to a self-drive North Cyprus itinerary.
İskele & Long Beach
Sea, sand and an easy road east
İskele has become one of the most popular areas along the eastern coast of North Cyprus.
The region is particularly well known for Long Beach, while its location makes it a useful base for exploring both Famagusta and the Karpaz Peninsula.
Having a car gives you the freedom to move beyond the resort areas and discover smaller beaches, villages and coastal stops along the way.
Güzelyurt & Lefke
A quieter side of North Cyprus
Drive west and the landscape begins to change.
The Güzelyurt and Lefke regions offer citrus-growing countryside, mountain scenery, historic sites and a slower pace than the main tourist centres.
For visitors staying longer in North Cyprus, a drive west can reveal an entirely different side of the island.
Places worth the drive
St Hilarion Castle
High in the Kyrenia mountain range, St Hilarion Castle rewards the climb with remarkable views across the surrounding mountains, coastline and Mediterranean.
The road into the mountains is part of the adventure, but allow enough time to explore the castle on foot once you arrive.
Bellapais Abbey
Just outside Kyrenia, Bellapais Abbey sits above the coast in the foothills of the Five Finger Mountains.
Its Gothic architecture, peaceful village setting and views towards Kyrenia make Bellapais an easy addition to a day exploring the region.
Combine it with Kyrenia Harbour and the surrounding mountain roads for an excellent half-day drive.
Salamis Ancient City
Near Famagusta, the ruins of Salamis offer a glimpse into the island's ancient past.
Its archaeological remains make it one of the most important historical stops in eastern North Cyprus and an easy place to combine with Famagusta and the nearby coastline.
Kantara Castle
If you enjoy roads that lead somewhere memorable, put Kantara Castle on your route.
Its elevated position makes it a natural stop when travelling between the eastern coast and the Karpaz region.
Take your time on the mountain roads and enjoy the views along the way.
Golden Beach
Far out on the Karpaz Peninsula, Golden Beach is famous for its long stretch of sand and relatively undeveloped surroundings.
It takes longer to reach than the beaches close to Kyrenia or Famagusta — which is precisely why the drive is worthwhile.
Bring water and anything else you may need for the day, particularly when travelling outside the busiest season.
Find your North Cyprus beach
You don't have to drive far in North Cyprus to find the Mediterranean.
Around Kyrenia you'll find popular beaches and smaller coves, while the eastern coast opens into longer stretches of sand towards Famagusta, İskele and Karpaz.
Some of the best-known areas include:
- Alagadi Beach – east of Kyrenia and particularly known for its protected turtle nesting area.
- Kervansaray Beach – a convenient option close to Kyrenia.
- Long Beach – a long sandy coastline around the İskele area.
- Glapsides Beach – a popular sandy beach near Famagusta.
- Golden Beach – the iconic Karpaz option for travellers willing to drive further.
The best beach for your trip might not be the most famous one.

Driving in North Cyprus
Exploring North Cyprus by car is straightforward once you understand a few basics.
Drive on the left
Vehicles drive on the left-hand side of the road in North Cyprus.
If you're accustomed to driving on the right, give yourself a little time to adjust — particularly at junctions and roundabouts.
Take your time
A road trip isn't a race.
Mountain roads, village streets and rural routes can require more attention than major roads. Slow down and enjoy the journey.
Plan fuel stops
Fuel stations are easy to find around the main towns and populated areas, but services become less frequent when travelling into remote parts of the Karpaz Peninsula.
For longer trips, it's sensible to fill up before heading into more isolated areas.
Navigation
Online maps are useful for most journeys, but don't be surprised if exploring North Cyprus occasionally leads you onto a smaller road than expected.
That's sometimes where the best views are.
Parking
Parking is generally easier outside the centres of the larger towns. Around historic areas and busy tourist locations, look for designated parking areas and always follow local signs and restrictions.
